Show Week: A Nightmare A Minute, But Living The Dream!
I meant to have this blog in Paul Heyman’s inbox two days ago. Ah, show week. It’s not even that this week has been really eventful. "BUSY" is more the word. We have a lot going on. This Friday and Saturday is the Dragon Gate USA pay-per-view premiere of "Enter The Dragon." There isn’t any hard labor with that, just a lot of time spent promoting. The bulk of the work has to do with preparations for Saturday afternoon. EVOLVE will present an afternoon event in Rahway, NJ at the Rahway Rec Center. It will be a special day as Bryan Danielson, now making news as Daniel Bryan in WWE, will have his final match in EVOLVE, the promotion he actually named.
To give you an idea of what a show week looks like, in the last 48 hours I’ve written up the details of the show; sent our announcers commentary notes; mailed everyone on the card; promoted non-stop through any online vehicle possible; wrote press releases; set up the date for the next EVOLVE card, including booking talent for it; exchanged emails with our production staff; talked on the phone with a variety of people that all need to be on the same page for the show to be a success; and texted like crazy. Oh yeah, there have been a great deal of other things I have forgotten to list.
I am really excited about this weekend. While you can read that as hype coming from a promoter, I really believe that this weekend is actually a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans in the New Jersey and New York City areas. The weekend kicks off early, even before the EVOLVE show, but in the same venue, as
The Wrestling Reunion Convention will take place at the Rahway Rec Center from 9am-3pm. Then "EVOLVE 5: Danielson vs. Sawa" will take place from 4pm until about 6-6:30pm. This will give fans going to the sold out ROH show tomorrow night in Manhattan plenty of time to make the short trip over to 34th Street in NYC.
So, why is this opportunity so unique? Well, it means fans can catch all three events on what is sure to be a memorable day for independent wrestling. One of the things we did for this show was to market the fact we tried in these hard economic times to make things a little more affordable. As a promotional idea, we decided to give $5 off on EVOLVE tickets to anyone bringing their ROH or Wrestling Reunion ticket to the door on the day of the show. Our thought process was that we want to offer the independent wrestling fans the chance to experience the past, present and future all in one day.
So, why make that offer?
Well, our hope is that it means new eyes on the EVOLVE brand. This is our chance to win over new potential customers. EVOLVE will need to be in peak form. We have Bryan Danielson vs. Munenori Sawa. We have seven other matches that could all be show stealers. With Danielson and Sawa leading the way, we’re trying to get as many people to simply come and sample our product, because we believe we have a product that is truly worthy of a fan’s support. We just need the chance to demonstrate that fact. .
In the time I’ve written this blog my voicemail has filled up, the emails have kept pouring in, texts are lighting up my phone. No emergencies, just the busy routine. Time to get back to work. We are only a few hours away from DGUSA on PPV and the biggest live EVOLVE card yet. Time to hustle…
